APEX Maths Chișinău: Three Weeks That Brought World-Class Math Closer to Young People

Thirty young people passionate about mathematics from the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Ukraine, France, China, and the United States had the opportunity in Chișinău to explore mathematics at the university and research level for three weeks, alongside three internationally renowned researchers from France. The first edition of APEX Maths held in the Republic of Moldova concluded with a ceremony during which participants and teachers were congratulated and received certificates for their contribution to this academic experience.
Organized by the Institute of Education and Psychology for Society (IEPS), APEX Maths Chișinău 2026 brought advanced mathematical concepts, complex problems, proofs, and insights into scientific research into the classroom, in an intensive format designed for high-achieving young people with a passion for the field.
Throughout the program, participants had the opportunity to learn from Olivier Schiffmann, a CNRS researcher at the Laboratoire de Mathématiques d’Orsay, Université Paris-Saclay; Frédéric Bourgeois, a researcher at the same institution and a specialist in symplectic geometry and differential topology; and Siarhei Finski, a CNRS researcher and professor at the École Polytechnique. Scientific coordination of the program was provided by Olivier Schiffmann, recipient of the Gabrielle Sand Prize from the French Academy of Sciences.
The final day of the program was dedicated to the participants, faculty, and everyone who made this inaugural event possible. During the closing ceremony, the 30 participants were congratulated and received certificates, and the professors and researchers involved in the program were, in turn, presented with certificates in recognition of their contributions.
Beyond the classroom and math problems, those three weeks created a space where the young people could get to know one another, exchange ideas, and discover new perspectives on science. They also had the opportunity to experience the Republic of Moldova beyond the classroom—its places, traditions, culture, and people.
